An event booking and community building app

01

Challenge

Events happen all around in cities, but attending an event alone feels more like task in the to-do list than an experience. There is more to an event, a lot happens after the event, and a lot happens later. The excitement is more when shared.

02

But, why be part of a community?

Going to an event or a show is a collective experience. The journey from discovery of an event, to booking it, to waiting for it to happen, and to its completion is an experience itself. People prefer being part of the community so that they can stay in touch of the world that makes them happy, to learn more on the subject matter, to engage and find opportunities too.

what’s happening is...

🤓 💻

College students and busy professionals, work for days at stretch present a unique challenge of finding community and like-minded people to share similar interests in attending events and shows

👩🏽‍🔧

👩🏻‍💻

😭

👩🏻‍⚕️

👨🏻‍🍳

Every one has their own set of interests, their own schedule, and their own plans. It is a task to convince friends to invest time and money on even a show.

😅 🫱🏼 🤛🏼 🥲

Even if the convincing part is overcome, there are a whole bunch of other problems like “how will I travel this far?”, “the show gets over at this time, but I have to do that at that time!”... and so on!

“I wanted to travel to an event and create a vlog about it, I am a fashion enthusiast and create content about it. The event was literally on the other end of the city, but both my friends had prior commitments. There were amazing creators from around the city and had a videographer to record them, I was too shy to talk to anyone. I wish I could collaborate with someone or maybe know more about it.”

Kangana Mishra

Mumbai, college student

“I usually go alone to any event, I cant keep convincing my friends to take interest in shows and events! I dont blame them. It is a huge city, and nobody wants to spend money on something they barely care about. But making connections during the event is quiet refreshing. Its difficult, but yeah I manage.”

Manthan Gupta

“My whole week flies away in front of a screen. I am new to the city, and barely know anyone enough to have same interests as me.”

🤌🏼 Explore Community

The challenge called for not just a ticket to the event, but also a ticket to the community, a gateway to share experiences, stories, recommendations, and build connections. At the same time, the approach had to respect the privacy of the attendees which shall result in a seamless connection.

🤘🏽‍ Build Real Time Connections

Once the event is LIVE, to build a real time connection is introduced to align with the needs of the user. It encourages the user to take an actionable step at their own discretion.

Design Thinking

The app is designed with a straight forward goal, that is to create a point of interaction, a gateway for users who wish to catch opportunities to build contacts.

THE APP IS

Find the best suited event of interest

For building contacts, create collaborations, form friendships through events, shows

Meant to be a starting point of connections

THE APP IS NOT

Asking you to create content or maintain profiles

A tool to look around for people outside the event shows

Key Design Decisions: User Friendly Approach

The layout of content is meant to replicate viewer behaviour, if and when engaged with a category of event. To create a direction for the chosen destination in user’s interests, a set of defined screens are designed under the respective category.

This is like a hero section of the screen,

the user preferred to be familiar with their

own interest in mind (a reel format in

every event screen)

The section that sparks interest by showing

the status

User retention and a complimentary update

Nevertheless 😄, too much of replication to derive familiarity from outside lead to visual inconsistency in the design, as there were incompetant interactions.

Unlike standup comedy that grabs

viral discovery through short form

content like reels, movies are primarily

trailer based discoveries.

Users couldn’t engage with these cards

intuitively, especially the cta button to

view tickets looked too urgent and soon

as compared to the other card interactions.

V1

A blend of both.

V2 (the final)

How to tackle the discovery of LIVE Event feature on the nav bar?

No interest in discovery after certain time,

as it only activates when the event is LIVE.

Hence, the user memory does not

remember to spot its usage.

Activate the state the moment event

is LIVE. The state is active despite the

screen is different.

Should there be a nav bar on LIVE Event screen?

The maximum real estate of the screen has to

be occupied by the map and the attendees status.

As it steers better interaction and discovery

The status cards activate the attendee status on

the map, it is necessary for it remain accessible,

hence at the bottom

The LIVE itinerary strategically placed at the

bottom, visible enough to let the user catch

updates

Considering these parameters I decided to not show navigation bar on the LIVE event screen, This made all the more important for the LIVE icon to remain activated throughout

Building a Brand

I decided to choose colours and a theme that is simple yet bold. As this is an event app, I realised it already has an array and videos.

Lessons & Further Beyond

This project has stretched across 3 months, along my training in UI/UX design. The goal has been to maximise observation, and deepen the sense of understanding towards the user. There had been a dozen of problem statements and even more ever exciting ideas. With time, as I learned and practised, I understood the importance of constraints and meaningful journeys. It is a blend of both that leads to the useful product.

What next?

There are still many aspects of this project that are yet to be explored, to be brainstormed about. For example:

How does these connections that are build decide the future usage of the app?

Can there be a feature to let users recommend an event or show status of booking to other friends within the app itself?

As already mentioned this app is unlike social media platform for content posting, but this is about to be able to view what events your friends might be attending.

What is the user behaviour when they make real time connection?

There is a lot of scope with which different use cases of the app can be discovered.
